School Profile

Eagle Point Primary School (No. 3215) was established in 1894.  It is a rural school situated in the township of Eagle Point between Bairnsdale and Paynesville in a picturesque setting overlooking Lake King, one of the Gippsland lakes.  The current enrolment is 56 children.  Many of the families of children attending this school work in Bairnsdale that has a population of approximately 10,000 people. It is a short, scenic drive of 10km along the Mitchell River. Our school offers an alternative to the larger schools in the district for parents who appreciate the advantages of a rural school.

The central focus of the school is to provide students with sound and challenging experiences in a secure and supportive environment.  The school promotes the principles of equity and access by providing a wide range of curriculum opportunities and extra curricular activities.  Through the encouragement of independent learning, students develop a sense of worth and are confident in attaining success in all their endeavours.

There is a family atmosphere and a feeling of belonging in the school community.  The school is proud of its parental support and involvement, with active participation in all aspects of the school’s functions including School Council, educational programs, fundraising, grounds maintenance, school camps and excursions, end of year concert and social activities.

The school offers a sequential program in the 8 Key Learning Areas. We have three full-time teaching staff with children organised into 3 classes. An additional 0.6EFT teacher assists with the implementation of the Early Literacy Program and reading intervention. We also provide a Specialist Program in Health & Physical Education as well as Science.  Enrichment and support is provided through a sports program, religious education, camping program and Junior School Council. The sports program involves tennis lessons in first term, swimming program in third term, hockey 7’s on Saturday mornings in a competition in Bairnsdale, interschool athletics and winter sports competitions, and Bike Ed challenge.

Eagle Point Primary School is a member of a group of similar schools in the district called the Mitchell River Cluster. The children are given the opportunity for greater social interaction by participating in larger group activities such as athletics, winter sports such as hockey, soccer, t-ball, netball and football, group days and camps.  This interaction aids transition to Secondary College and the teachers benefit from the collaboration with colleagues via joint professional development programs. Most children attending Eagle Point Primary School will further their education by going onto either Bairnsdale Secondary College or Nagle College.

The school consists of an historical timber building, currently used as an administration centre. Three other air-conditioned portables are utilised as classrooms for Grades Prep & 1, Grades 2 & 3 and Grades 4, 5 & 6. An additional portable serves as a multi purpose room for such activities as the Early Years reading program, music, science, physical education and meeting room. A separate art shed adjacent to the school accommodates the expanding needs and interest in this subject shown by the students. A concreted bike shelter has also being built attached to the art shed to house the bicycles that  many of the children ride to school.

These buildings are set in spacious and well-maintained grounds with many native trees.  Extensive lawns are a feature of the school, combined with an oval with an automated sprinkler system which provides a large flat grassed area. The grounds are further enhanced with an asphalt area, basketball court, rebound wall and multi faceted, adventure playground.

Over recent years enrolments have risen (current enrolment 68). It is anticipated that this enrolment level will be maintained over the coming years.  An active School Council backed up by strong community support is meeting the challenge of this continuing growth. The development of a larger school library and student resource centre is an ongoing project. Numeracy and writing have been chosen as priorities in our Charter and student resources for this subject are being increased. We have networked computer facilities in all classrooms providing state of the art staff and student access to internet, e-mail and desktop publishing tools. Computer to student ratio is relatively high at 1:4 ensuring more than adequate computer access for all students. In addition to our library facilities, the Mobile Area Resource Centre with a teacher visits fortnightly, providing access to an even larger range of resources.

Eagle Point Primary School is strongly supported by the community both in and out of the classroom. This ongoing support contributes to the friendly tone of the school and plays a large part in the positive manner in which the staff, students and wider community interact. In recent years we have been very proud to introduce a School Drug Education Strategy combined with a Personal Safety / Healthy Relationships program. We have regular visits from the Life Ed van, RACV on road safety issues, Police Community Program with visiting police officers, and participation for senior grades in a Personal Development and sexuality program provided by visiting community and school nurses.

Eagle Point has an ongoing commitment to emphasise the development of literacy and numeracy skills. Our priority will be the implementation of the Early Numeracy Program and the extension of numeracy  resources combined with the enhancement of teaching skills.
